This is a magnificent children's picture book with the lore of African Americans and outstanding illustrations. I found this a highly exceptional excellent quality book filled with a tale reminiscent of Native American lore.
Schwartz and Wade Books sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you). It was published October 11th, so the book is available for purchase now.
Leo and Diane Dillon did the artwork and it's really special. The pictures are strong, dynamic and generally impressive. They add understanding to the free verse telling the story.
Ms. McKissack writes this folktale with words that flow smoothly and express the joys and sorrows of a family broken apart. The elementals are part of the story and the illustrations demonstrate the size and power they have.
The author tells a tale of African American history (slavery) and how a family's love continues despite hardships. She also emphasizes that the families never forget the kidnapped victims.
This truly is a lovely book and I believe it will become a collectible. Why not grab a copy a now while it's easy to find and put in your permanent library?
