I always enjoy reading about Ali and her husband's snooping business.  The wonders of technology and hackers abound in their stories and they make the most of what's available to them.  Sometimes they find things that aren't really available but they'll use those, too.

Ali and B. are busy trying to save Bob, who would never kill anyone.  While they are working on that, they also working on who did kill the investment manager and his wife.  Since Bob and his wife lost $1.2 million, they had plenty of motive.  But where did the money go?  And can they get it back?

They know the owner of the company stole it.  What they don't know is that there is a killer working in the same company that kills with no guilt.  As they follow the trail of money and check out the owner and his personal assistant, they find more than they are looking for and the path they are following gets dangerous.

I thought sure the killer was going to get away.  I'm happy to say that those who broke the law will be paying for their crime.  And I'm going to be reading the next book in this series.  The characters are now like old friends and I enjoy a visit every now and again.  If you haven't read this series, it's good.  Ms. Jance keeps you on your toes.  If you're a nail biter, this series will do that to you. 

Cold Betrayal: An Ali Reynolds Novel by J.A. Jance

She's pregnant and has been hit by a car.  Sister Anselm is an advocate for the ill and she takes this young woman under her wing.  When she learns she's running from polygamous marriage, she remembers another young girl that fled and then disappeared.  She's ready to defend her.

Ali is enjoying married life and would like to have more time with her husband.  The problem is that she's a cop and she's often gone.  His job takes him all over, too.  Right now, she has this young pregnant woman to help (Sister A makes sure of that) and her new daughter-in-law is asking for help for her grandmother.  Someone is trying to make Betsy look unstable so she can put in a nursing home.

The past and present merge together through this story and it's pretty brutal.  The head of the farm of the polygamous family rules like a god, and he's greedy and insane.  When you find out how he's made all his money and what his plans are for the future, it will make your blood run cold.

I think adding the nun and Ali's husband makes for a very touch.  She's able to do more with her husband's aid and that's a good thing.

If you're not familiar with J A Jance, she writes good books.  This is one of her newer characters.  Find some of her old books and try them while you're waiting for this one to be published.  I don't think you'll be disappointed you did.

Deadly Stakes by J.A. Jance

Ali Reynolds is an academy trained police applicant, but the job never materialized.  She's also an ex-journalist.  When a woman she met casually asks her to help prove her innocence in the death of her boyfriend's ex-wife, she decides to take the job.

I've read J A Jance for years and have followed her characters through highs and lows.  It's been a while, though, so when I saw this one I had an urge to see if her writing had changed; I knew her characters had in this book.

There are two stories intertwined in this mystery.  The murdered victim was not alone; there was another body in close proximity.  The only thing relating them is the young boy who found the murdered woman and texted for help and the fact that he is the son of the murdered man.  The man and woman did not know each other.

This is a mix of a dysfunctional family, a con man going straight, greed, love, and honor.  The story is a bit convoluted, but it all ties together at the end.  Ms. Jance keeps your mind busy and releases her clues piece by piece.
