Saddled with Murder by Eileen Brady

Kate is a vet but she can get caught up in a silly moment, too.  They are eating litter cake (looks like, doesn't taste like) and they ask her what she'd wish for.  She jokes she'd wish for her difficult clients to disappear and names them. The employee posts it on social media, but doesn't remove her damning words.

But when she thinks about it, there is more than one suspect.  Can she figure out who really did it?  Can she keep herself alive when she does?

When Kate visits a dog owner to examine a cut on the dog, the owner shows her an old bone the dog brought home with him.  The tone changes when Kate tells her the bone is human...

Kate visits several homes to take care of their animals and she picks up gossip on the way.  When the body is identified as a high school student who disappeared ten years ago, his family asks her to look into it.  She takes some photos, finds out who is in the pictures and then she goes looking for them so she can ask nosy questions.  Her cop friend wants her to stop.  Her "once" boyfriend comes home from a dig in Africa and helps her investigate.

Between the stories she hears (someone has to be lying), the lack of evidence, and two men interested in her, she's not sure where she's going.

This was a good read.  I had no idea who the real villain was and Kate's savior that keeps her alive at the final confrontation was a surprise, too.  Now if she'll just pick her man, she'll have it made. 

Unleashed: A Kate Turner DVM Mystery by Eileen Brady

Kate is a veterinarian and a very good one.  She knows everyone in this small community and almost all of them are her friends.  She knows people who own animals even better because she cares for them.  When she hears that Claire has committed suicide, she can't believe it.  She brought Toto in for treatment and was acting just fine.  It would be totally out-of-character for her to have ended her life.  But there's no proof it was anything else...

Kate is just a temporary vet at this clinic but it feels permanent.  She lives upstairs, she has a dog, and she's working on a relationship.  It's long distance but that's OK at this point in her life.  She's also good friends with a cop and that might grow into something more in time.  In this story, they're mostly angry at each other because she's trying to investigate the death as a murder and he's trying to get her to leave it alone and accept it as suicide because there is no evidence to the contrary and she's left a note.

She even gets Gramps involved in sleuthing with her.  I like Kate as character and enjoy the various other eccentric characters she gets involved with.  After all, how many people let a pot-bellied pig sleep in their bed with them?

Kate was right; it was murder.  And the more she investigates, the more danger she's getting in.  She knows the mentally handicapped boy who works for her didn't kill her despite his confession.  He thought he did but it was because he was confused. The book ends with a knock-down drag out fight and you aren't sure who's going to win until the end.  

I enjoyed this read.  Why don't you give it a try?  You'll learn about some vet techniques, too.

Muzzled, A Kate Turner DVM Mystery by Eileen Brady

Kate is just making a routine house call to check on the show dogs of an elderly couple.  When she finds the door unlocked and steps in, she finds all the dogs loose and the couple dead.  It's when she notices they have been shot that she gets really concerned.

I enjoy reading books that have animals featured in them so I grabbed this one when I found it.  It's a very nice start to a new series and I'll be reading more of Ms. Brady's work as I find it.

The Chief of Police dismisses it as murder/suicide, but Kate's not buying that.  They had a major competition coming up in a new days and that's why she was inspecting the dog that was to be presented.  If they were depressed, they wouldn't have signed up for the show.  It didn't look like anyone had a motive.  Then a long lost daughter shows up and all she wants is the dogs.  She's going to sell them and get rich.  

In order to move the dogs (and sell one out of the country), she needs vets certifications.  Kate gives her those but is bothered by the fact that the current champion seems a bit different.  She's pretty sure she put the IV in the other leg, but it's not written down anywhere.  She stifles her doubt and signs the papers.  The daughter sells the dog for a million dollars to a foreign buyer.  

Kate is even more affected when she finds out that some of the older champions were put down, some were taken to the various humane societies and the daughter never even kept one for herself.  How could she do that?  If that isn't enough to bother the vet, she finds a dog that has been hit by a car and is almost dead.  When she treats him and cleans him up, she realizes she's found the true champion.  She keeps quiet about, though, because she's going to keep him as a pet herself.

In the meantime, the daughter briefly becomes a suspect but she has an alibi.  So who's the killer?  Poor Kate has no idea how close the killer is to her...

The author has vet experience and shares her knowledge in the story.  The story is fast paced and full of little odd facts that finally come together at the end.  I'm looking forward to the next in this series!
