A Good Day for Chardonnay by Darynda Jones, Series: Sunshine Vicram Series (#2)

Sunshine is a police chief in a small town.  She had a bad time in her life back when she was young.  That's why she has a daughter now.  But she doesn't remember what happened.

St. Martins Press and Edelweiss allowed me to read this book for review (thank you).  It will be published July 27th.

Sunny's daughter is just like her.  While Mom is trying to take  care of a bar fight gone bad, her daughter is searching for a serial killer.  She decides it's an old lady and takes her boyfriend and best friend with her when she's ready to break in and look for proof.

The first time is not a problem but the second time she gets in the middle of a fight and ends up with a head wound.  Her boyfriend has been knifed so neither is in good shape.

Then Sunny remembers her attack.  There were several men involved, including one she loves.

There are all kinds of tricks and lies to keep her away from the truth but she keeps pushing and eventually gets to the truth.

There is a lot happening and Mom and daughter both have things to adjust, too.  It was an interesting read.

A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones

Sunshine has returned home to become the new sheriff.  She was surprised to find she'd won the election because she had never entered the race.  It seems her parents entered her...

It's her first day on the job and she walks into a huge mess.  A woman claims a man has stolen her rooster, Puff Daddy.  A young girl is missing from school and believes she'll die on her fifteenth birthday, which isn't far away.  Her parents are frantic.  A young disabled boy is missing and the weather is very bad.

If that wasn't bad enough she sees her old boyfriend in town and he looks better than ever.  Then the US Marshalls come to help look for the girl and one of them is a hunk, too.  She's got too much to do to worry about romance.

Her daughter is having trouble at school and the bullies find out her mother's secret and play it on the school's television.  The sheriff's secret is out but almost everyone knew the truth anyway.

This is a hell of a beginning for the new sheriff but she has a way with dealing it all.  She's a refreshing character and I look forward to reading more about her adventures.

First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

She's a part-time private investigator, but it's her other job that's interesting.  Very interesting...


St. Martin's Press sent me an ARC of this book for review (thank you).  This book is being published this month, so check with your local bookstore for a copy.


Ms. Jones has created a character you won't soon forget.  She's pretty, she's mouthy, and she's tough.  She also has a paranormal power that lets her see the ghosts of people who have been killed.  This is a really handy trait for her uncle, who is a homicide cop.  But not all ghosts know who killed them...


She also adds another tantalizing male character that has some power over her.  It might be scary but he's really sexy looking and she enjoys his attentions.


They both have their secrets.


Solving murders with talking ghosts sounds corny, but I sure enjoyed reading this story.  You have a mystery, hot sexual tension, smart-mouthed conversation - what more do you need?


This is the first book from this author and it's a good one.  I can also tell there will be another one.  And I'll be looking forward to reading that one, too.
