10 Valentine Friends by Janet Schulmann

Here's another Valentine idea.  How about a learn-to-count book with Valentines?

Each page has one more Valentine until you get to the number 10.  My favorite part about this book is that you see the illustrations the young one has drawn on the cards (the smallest looks like scrambled eggs and ham) and it might help inspire your own child to make their own card.  If you're going to do that, you better give it to them a few days early.

Here's an easy way to learn to count and the board book holds up with little fingers.  It also lasts longer than candy.  Why not share a book with your little one?

10 Easter Egg Hunters by Janet Schulman

Count Easter eggs all the way up to ten while reading this really cute board book to your little ones.

Alfred A Knopf sent me a copy of this book for review.  It has been published, so visit your local bookstore and pick up a copy for your child's Easter basket.  It will last longer than candy...

Ms. Davick's illustrations remind me a bit of the pacman character:  round faces, with big smiles.  The children are all dressed in bright colors and are wearing funny hats.  They will make your little ones smile.

The fun part is to see how many eggs the little one can find before the text tells its location.

Have you ever lost an Easter egg?  My Mom could never remember where she hid them, so sometimes we'd find later than we should have.  Don't drop it, you'll be sorry; it smells to high heaven!

No problem with these eggs, you'll find them all and there are no shells to mess with either.  With no effort at all, your child will learn to count to ten.

This is a bright, fun picture book for young readers that has lots of colors, lots of valentine's cards and they just happen to learn numbers along the way...

My favorite part of this picture book are the cards the children make each other.  Each page has a larger number of cards, so they learn to count as they turn the pages.  But the text is about the children's aspirations and hopes and interests and that's what decorates the valentine's card for them.  The artwork is child-like and very well done.  

This is great opportunity for you to teach your child how to make a card themselves.  They can draw and color one.  They could use magazine photos and ads to create one.  They could even go fancier with glitter and ribbon and other scrapbooking materials. Why not read this story with them and make your own cards?

We Love Our School by Judy Sierra

This is a picture book about the first day of school done in a read together Rebus form; words plus pictures to make it easier to learn to read.

This is a very colorful picture book with cute, vibrant animals from Linda Davick.  They are whimsical and fun to look at, and will add to the joy of reading the story.

The text rhymes, which is a nice touch.  This is the story of the first day of school done in simple words with pictures in the sentences that replace the actual word.  

The pink sheep is my favorite character. It looks like she's wearing little balloons on her head and she's hot pink!

If your child is having a bit of time learning to read, this is a good book for them.  Learning to recognize the words in the form of an illustration will make it easier for them to see the words in writing, too.
