Ballots for Bella by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen

This is an historic moment I didn't even know existed.  I've read a lot of history here and there, but I never knew a woman ran for president in the past.  Especially when only men could vote!

Abrams Books for Young Readers sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you).  It's been published, so you can grab a copy now at your local bookstore.

Belva began her life trying to move a mountain.  That didn't work but she still believed she could and she just took on other mountains.  She was breaking glass ceilings before anyone even coined that word.

She had a busy personal life, became a lawyer (only after appealing to the President for her diploma) and she even went so far as to run for president.  How can you not admire a woman like that?  She ran for office despite the odds.

Even voting was different then.  This was a nice historical look at a brave woman who defied the system and worked on equality in the late 1800's.  She deserves to be remembered.
