Marjorie Fleming is back and her troubles are no less in this book; they just have changed faces...

The hot topic in the village is about the new superstore proposal.  If the property owner sells the property, all the small shops will need to relocate and it will change the flavor of that street and the village.  There are people on both sides of the issue and the meeting gets a bit loud, but the property owner isn't there to decide their fate.  They think he's still mulling over the issue and hasn't made a decision yet.  He'll never finish making that decision because someone has shot him and he's dead...

There are multiple suspects, everyone has a shotgun for hunting, and  no one saw anything because they were all at the meeting.  Marjorie sends her team out to investigate, being antsy because she'd like to help.  The brass above want answers and all she's getting is more questions, no answers.  It doesn't help when someone "leaks" the story to the press, making the investigation tougher.  Then a boy is shot and killed and people are beginning to fear for their lives.  

At the center of this investigation you have everything from rowdy boys, police affairs, and fraud to murder.  This is the toughest case Marjorie has had to face so far and it doesn't have a happy resolution.  Life is tough sometimes.  

With all that happened in this story, I'll be interested in seeing what Ms. Templeton throws at Marjorie in the next book.  Each book by this author is getting better.  Have a read and see what you think.

Lying Dead (DI Marjory Fleming #3) by Aline Templeton

When a teenage boy riding a mountain bike has the misfortune to hit a rock, fall off and almost land on a body, DI Fleming is called out.  It appears it's murder.  Who is she and how did she get here?

DI Fleming has found things a bit colder around her since the hoof and mouth disease went through.  She was in a position of authority and had to enforce the law.  The fact that she was there while the animals were being put down gave the local folks a person to blame.  It was a disease, it was a law, but she was human and they could hate her.

While they try to determine the woman's identity, Marjory again has to deal with the people of her town.  Many aren't saying much.  Those who do talk might not be telling the truth.

Ms. Templeton writes a good mystery but they are very wordy.  She gives you a complete background on characters and a great description of the land and community.  I'd like a bit less description and more action, but when the action comes, the pages turn fast enough.

Everybody had something to hide.  There are affairs, lost love, lost hope and greed all mixed about in the town.  Every question she asks purses someone's lips and many of the answers are false.  Marjory keeps digging, but she knows the further she goes, the less she will be liked.

The ending surprised me.  I had no idea who the killer was.  Also, I want to put the author on notice that she cannot let Tam die.  She makes you care about her characters and then does a nasty thing to one.  It made me want to doctor that part of the story.

Life has been good for DI Fleming.  They have a small farm with chickens and sheep and her children are healthy and fun.  Her husband loves her deeply and her career is moving along as she would like.  Unfortunately, this situation changes abruptly with hoof and mouth disease moving across the countryside and an old murder coming to life...

Witness Impulse and Edelweiss gave me the opportunity to read this ebook for review (thank you).  It has been published and you can find a copy wherever you buy ebooks.  I enjoy Witness Impulse books.  They're short, have good plots, and are a quick and entertaining read.

When animals have to be put down, families come up in arms and are totally devastated by the loss.  The worst loss felt is by those who have been breeding stock for years.  Their legacy can be destroyed in one afternoon.  Where do they go from there?

The worst part for DI Fleming is that she must oversee this ugly business; it's her job.  Her friends are suddenly her friends no longer.  Even her husband is becoming estranged.

Then they find a dead body.  It's from years ago.  The girl was gored to death.  Who is she and how did she get buried there?  Who killed her?

The investigation goes back in time.  DI Fleming has to suspend one of her inspectors because it was found on his family's land.  The more she digs into family history, the worse it looks.  This family has some ugly secrets and tempers that are out of control.

The police follow all the cobwebs to the center of web to find out who the killer is.  Poor DI Fleming has a lot to resolve and can only hope her life will go back to being as happy as it was at the beginning of the story.  I hope so, too.
