The Boy Who Grew Dragons by Andy Shepherd

He's helping his grandpa clean up his garden area when he runs across an odd plant.  It has bright red fruit that looks about ready to harvest.  He convinces his grandpa to let it go until he can do some research on it.  It's a dragon fruit tree...

Little Bee Books and Edelweiss let me read this book for review (thank you).  It will be published on February 4th.

What Tomas finds is that it literally grows small dragons.  He sneaks it home with him and makes some unsavory discoveries.  It poos all over and it smells awful.  Some of it even explodes!  He can't shoot fire but he does shoot sparks and that can start a fire.  His sharp claws rip holes in things, like his pillow case.  He has an awful time hiding him...

When his friends at school finally find out about it, they want one, too.  There's new fruit about ready to ripen so they arrange to stay overnight in his grandparent's yard.  Nobody gets much sleep  and they wake up to the crabby neighbor next door shouting at his grandpa.  That's when all the dragons awaken, too.  It turns into a major mess then.

Will the adults discover the dragons?
