The Beekeeper's Bullet by Lance Hawvermale

Ellenor is working as a beekeeper and teacher in Germany.  She's an American but she wanted to see the world.  She never anticipated getting close to the war.

Wild Rose Press shared a copy of this book with me for review (thank you).  It has been published and you can get a copy now.

She's trying to determine what caused two of her hives to die when she notices a plane crash.  She goes to see what happened and finds the pilot wounded.  When he tries to grab her, she shoots him.  He deflects the bullet with his hand.  She decides to hide him in the barn.  He's the enemy in this country.  Then she finds that a German fleet will be billeting at the house.  The planes will be landing in the morning.  She moves him up with her bees so they won't find him.  He's trying to locate his sister.

He's going to steal a plane to go to where his sister is but he needs her help to start the plane.  She needs to turn the propeller to get it going.  She agrees but when they start shooting at her, he circles around and tells her to climb on board.  She can't go back but she has no where to go now.  Neither does he.

When he finds his sister, she doesn't want to leave.  She tells him about improvements that have been made in town and he has to destroy them or all his colleagues will be killed.  Of course, he needs Ellenor to be his gunner.  She doesn't know how to that either, but she learns.  However, the German captain from the house is on their trail.

When they go to blow up the armaments, he's there trying to take them down.  Who will win?
