Dog Loves Counting by Louise Yates

Dog loves reading but he knows he has to put his book down and go to sleep.  He's not sleepy, though.  Counting sheep doesn't work.  Maybe if he checked his books he could find another animal to count...

Random House Children's Books sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you).  It's been published, so check with your local bookstore for a copy.  There are two other Dog Loves... books out that you might want to look at, also.  He's a cutie who likes learning.

Dog starts with an egg.  It's just one egg.  When it hatches and it's a dodo, he calls it Number One.  He's Number Two because he has two legs, a sloth becomes Number Three because he has three claws and so on.  Your child will meet all kinds of animals in this book and learn to count forward and backward.  The illustrations are bright and colorful.

This is a fun way to learn and I enjoyed all the animals shown.  The dog is my favorite, though.  All those books around his bed just made me smile.

Dog Loves Drawing by Louise Yates

This is a delightful book that begins with a dog who loves to read.  When he gets a birthday gift that is a journal, he decides to learn to draw.

The best part is that the things he draws come to life and they help draw!  The story goes on page by page in the journal and the drawings do resemble a young one's art.

Why not give your child this book with a journal and some colored pencils for Halloween?  It sure beats candy that will be gone in day.  Leave them with a fun memory of a unique Halloween "treat".

Young Fredle by Cynthia Voigt

Fredle has the misfortune of becoming ill after eating a chocolate peppermint patty and his family puts him out of the nest.  If that wasn't bad enough, the Missus finds him and puts him OUTSIDE!


Alfred A Knopf Books for Young Readers published this book in January and sent me a hardcover for review (thank you).  Louise Yates is the illustrator, and her delicate drawings really fit Fredle, a young mouse.


This a delightful story of mouse life and what they eat, how dangerous other animals are to them, and what "lifestyles" the house mouse, the barn mouse, and the basement mouse have.


Fredle has never been outside the kitchen and the kitchen walls, so being set down outside was quite a shock!  In no time at all he was searching for another shelter and just found it in time.  There are cats outside...


Ms. Voigt writes a very realistic tale.  Her mouse character has intelligence and uses it and his imagination to enjoy his time outside.


If your child has an interest in animals, they'll love this book.  Its down home charm will make them smile while they follow Fredle's adventures.  Pick up a copy now at your local bookstore.

What avid reader or bookseller wouldn't like this book? It's precious!

Alfred A Knopf Books for Young Readers published this book and has sent me a copy for review. I'm putting my copy in my personal library because it's so "me".

Dog loves everything about books: how they feel, how they smell, just everything about them. (So do I...)

So he opens a bookstore. (So did I.) And no one comes in to buy books. This not a unique problem for booksellers. After waiting for a while, Dog decides he'll read some of his new books to pass the time. And then he gets his first customer...

This book really does a great job of showing a child the wonders of reading and how much fun it can be to "travel" with a story.

I highly recommend this book. It's great for reading aloud at day cares or with groups of young children as well as a wonderful gift for your budding reader at home. It's for ages 4-8 and Ms. Yates illustrations are delightful.
