Isa says she's innocent but Jack knows she's holding something back.  They returned to the states for their little girl's ear surgery.  No one knew this case was pending.  As he begins to dig in the case, he finds bribery, lies, rape and more.  There were wicked men in Isa's earlier life and they are still around.

He gets stuck working with a less honorable attorney.  His friend gets arrested, too.  And no one wants to tell the whole truth.  The truth is not pleasant; it's even sordid.  Jack isn't sure their marriage will survive this crisis.

It's a fascinating read with lots of courtroom activity.  People from the past appear like ghosts.  And Jack comes very close to dying.  The one creating all the fear and making demands during the case liked to control things and had enough money and power to do so.  The culprit surprised me but not Isa.

This one will keep you guessing until the end.  Even the assistant district attorney isn't playing fair. 

Gone Again: A Jack Swyteck Novel by James Grippando

Sashi got out of her mother's car and walked the rest of the way to school.  Her mother never saw her again.  It's almost time for the man accused of her murder to die.  She tells Jack that her daughter is still alive because she calls her on her birthday.  She also asks Jack to take the case.  He's not doing that type of work anymore but he finds himself taking it on...

Nobody in this family is telling the whole truth.  Some are outright lying.  Jack is limited by what may discussed in the case.  He has to find a reason for a stay of execution.  He has some reasons but they seem to get shot down by the Judge.  He's fighting a losing battle and he knows something is not right but he's not sure exactly what.

This is a sad story about an adoption that did not work out well.  The older sister of the boy they wanted had been scarred more than they were told.  It affects their marriage, their own children, and causes big problems.

The more Jack finds out, the worse it gets.  He's still not sure if Sashi is alive or not.  As he keeps investigating and answering questions, he finds the ugly truth.  His pregnant wife, an FBI agent, helps by talking to the boy who tells her what he saw.

I found this to be a very gripping tale.  It shows how one person's actions can affect all those around them.  This was a tough case for Jack.  Even solving the mystery doesn't make him feel any better.

Cane and Abe by James Grippando

When a body is found in the Everglades and he's asked to monitor the case, Abe had no idea how much it was going to shake up his life.  It seemed like another routine case.  Not so...

Abe lost his first wife to cancer.  He loved her with all his heart but he wasn't meant to be a widower.  He takes back up with an old flame and marries her.  You should never do things on the rebound.

Life starts getting difficult right after he looks at that first body.  His brother-in-law from his first marriage is in trouble with the law and has mental problems.  He spends a lot of time living in his old home trying to settle him down.  This offends his wife and makes her feel unloved.

The case has him busy looking for clues.  When he finds out he knows one of the victims, he lies about how long it's been since he's seen her because he knows how it would look.  He should have thought about how looks when he lied.  Pretty soon, they're investigating him to see if he's the killer.

Then his wife disappears.  He's frantic because she's gone.  The cops know they were fighting and think he may have killed her.  As bad as all this is, there is one more final blow before the end of the book.  I'm surprised Abe is still standing.  

The best part of the story is the ending.  I won't give it away, but I think Abe has some more to worry about...

Afraid of the Dark by James Grippando

Jack Swyteck is back, and is trying to save a man from the death penalty for terrorist activity.

Mr. Grippando mixes a variety of darknesses together in this book.  There's a whiff of terrorism, lots of greed, sexual abuse of young girls and murder.  Each of those could have been the entire plot, but in this story they are all entwined in ways that a bit odd, but very believable.


Whether they are good guys or bad, the male characters are very strong and determined.  Past and present mix in this tale.  Even the characters working together aren't telling each other everything.


This one will keep you on toes and your fingers will keep flipping the pages to see where the story will go next.  It's not for the lighthearted.


If you like action, mystery, suspense and danger, you will like this book.
