This is a complex story of people, their emotions and their decisions in life. Take two dysfunctional families in a poor part of town and mix them together and you find ugliness and depravity. The mother is the matriarch of the family and she uses her power indiscriminately and ruthlessly. She may be old, but she's wicked.
It's a tangled tale that takes a long time to unweave. The story is interesting and Malin is having trouble in her own life. She's raising her daughter alone and finds that she's growing up faster than she expected. She also finds our her parents and the child's father know more about the child than she does. That's a rude awakening for a mother.
The murderer is not apparent, the tangled web hides some ugly secrets and living happily ever after doesn't seem to happen in this book. This is the gritty side of life. Surviving is what counts here.
