The first case he gets is a dead young woman. He determines her killer when the doctor didn't tell him about her venereal disease. The doctor confesses.
Then he's sent to look at another case of a young woman's death. No one knows who she is. They have no suspects. Another Chief Inspector had already worked the case with no answers. Ian figured he was going to be the fall guy. Then he starts to suspicion that his friend might have been the killer...
There's a lot of detecting to do to try to prove anything and who can better can hide the clues besides another cop?
Both Leslie and Ian had been in the war and it's taken its' toll on them. Hamish is living in Ian's brain and the woman was Leslie's love even though he was married.
Then a dead vagrant soldier was found and they attribute the death to him and close the case. But Ian isn't through asking questions...
This is a very involved murder and it has a sad ending but justice is served.
