Amelia Lost by Candace Fleming

Amelia was a brave, headstrong and determined woman; but she also had her faults...

Subtitle of this book is:  The Life and Disappearance of Amelia Earhart.

Schwartz & Wade have published this great biography for ages 8-12 on Amelia and sent me a copy for review (thank you).  It was published in February and is available at your local bookstores.

I've read several books from Schwartz & Wade and they do a very good job with non-fiction for young ones.  They choose good authors who use lots of illustrations and small "bites" of information to keep the students reading.

This book was no exception.  Ms. Fleming spent considerable time researching and weeding out facts and fiction about Amelia.  When she had a good picture of who she was and what she had accomplished, she began writing.  She also included a lot of photos and odd facts about Amelia which enhances readability.

This history is well written and sticks to facts about Amelia, letting the myths fall to the wayside.  Amelia's life was interesting enough she didn't need any myths about her; however, they made for good publicity and got her funding for her various escapades.

Amelia was fearless, determined to prove she could fly anything a man could, and sometimes took chances she shouldn't have.  She also occasionally didn't learn enough about the equipment before she began flying it.

No one yet knows what happened to Amelia.  But this author takes you back to the days of her childhood and through her busy and exciting life.  Readers will enjoy this look at an unconventional woman who was willing to risk all.

I highly recommend this book.  Check it out at your local bookstore.

Happy reading!
