The Straightshooter by Hank Madison

Floyd is a deputy, has a girl, and has a friend in jail.  When she pressures him to let Dave loose, he says no and they break up.  Now he has an injured heart, isn't sure about Dave's guilt, and a gang member in jail.  The rest of the gang will be trying to break him out.  Can he and the sheriff withstand them?

Pioneering Press sent me a copy of this book to read for review (thank you).  You can buy it now on Amazon as an ebook.

When Floyd goes back to his cabin, the gang is waiting for him.  They beat him badly but he won't breach the jail for them.  They leave him and grab the deputy that quit and force him to get the sheriff to open door.  Then they kill both the sheriff and the deputy and take their gang member and Dave both with them.

Floyd sets out first thing in the morning after them.  Before this adventure is through, he'll learn something about his friend, Dave, and his girlfriend will learn why Floyd upholds the law the way he does.  It's a cat and mouse hunt that ends up with most of the gang dead.

There's plenty of action, the guns speak often, and the true characters of people come out in this story.  It's a good western.
