Fair and Tender Ladies (Richard Nottingham #6) by Chris Nickson

It's the year 1734 and a young country lad comes looking for his sister.  She's a small blonde, running away to a better life.  Unfortunately, you won't find that in Leeds.  The best job available is as a prostitute and that's not safe.  Constable Nottingham tells him he hasn't seen her and she may be hard to find.  The very next day, the country lad is found dead...

Severn House and Net Galley allowed me to download an ebook of this story to read for review (thank you).  It will be published in January so put it on your TBR list now.

Nottingham has been a constable for a long time and he sees Leeds changing around him.  It's not all for the good either.  He feel badly about the young man's death.  Then they find his sister in the river.  Who would have killed them?

He's got more problems than that.  A con man from the past has come back to town with the great idea of reopening the workhouse.  His daughter starts a school for women and someone is threatening her and her school.  Another prostitute is killed.  All these incidents are connected in a 'round about way.

I found the story interesting and the characters talked to me.  They were very easy to relate to and you could feel their pain, too.  I certainly never expected the killers to be who they were.  I like that; it makes it a better book in my eyes.

Why don't you give it a try?

Thank you so much for the lovely review. There's one spoiler in there, though, that I'm hoping I can ask you to remove (I really want it to be a shock for people). I'd be grateful, and I hope I'm not asking too much. Thank you again, I appreciate the review :)
