Friends: Snake and Lizard by Joy Cowley

This young reader's chapter book is charming.  It's the tale of two enemies who are living together and trying to help other animals with their troubles.

Myrick Marketing and Media, a division of Gecko Press, and Net Galley gave me a copy of this ebook for review (thank you).  The illustrator is Gavin Bishop.  It has been published now and you can find a copy at your local bookstore.

This story is set in the desert and comes from Australia, but it could just as well be the desert sands we have here in New Mexico.  We also have snakes and lizards (and jack rabbits, road runners and more).

I really like the way Ms. Cowley has written simple little stories that children will enjoy reading.  Each story teaches a little lesson.  Mr. Bishop's illustrations enhance the story.  And the lizard is just a bit silly.  He thinks he can do a rain dance!  So what it doesn't rain for several more days: it was still his dance that made it rain.

Have your young reader read their favorite story aloud.  The stories aren't long, so they can pick them up and put them down if they aren't good at sitting still for long yet.  Most will probably read all the stories at once.  It's a kick to see what snake and lizard will do next!

Happy reading.
