Riverland by Fran Wilde

When their parents fight, they gather in the oldest one's bedroom and both sisters hide under the bed.  They have pillows and blankets and they feel safe there.  But one day, everything changes...

Amulet Books sent me a copy of this book to read for review (thank you).  It is being published today.

They consider their father a troll and their mother a witch.  Anything can set their father off and he's often talking about sending them away.  Their mother is loving but she gets angry, too.  So the bed get used a lot in the evenings while they still battle away downstairs.

One day, they find water under the bed.  A portal has opened and the younger jumps in the river fist, so the older has to follow.  They find another world.  One their grandmother and mother have visited but have forgotten.  It's an interesting world.  A heron asks them for help to save this world.  They just want to get back home.  There's a snake lady that only wants to use them to access their world.  She's friends with the nightmare horses there.  There are baby birds being born that are dreams in their world.  Finding themselves in a mostly unfriendly world of odd creatures is one thing but being asked to save their world and the new world they've found is overwhelming.  How can they do that?  And how can they get back home again?

As they attempt to answer these questions, things get worse at home and their father breaks a glass witch ball and makes things worse in both worlds.

Here's a land of fantasy, danger, and excitement.  You follow the young girls who are trying to help both worlds and hope they will be able to return home.  It's not the least bit boring and it keeps you glued to the pages until the end.  Could you save two worlds?
