Fire in the Hatch by E.C.R. Lorac

He's a wounded war veteran who wants to rent the Little Thatch long term.  He plans to marry in the future.  He likes living alone and minding his own business.  That still didn't keep him from getting killed...

Poisoned Pen Press and Edelweiss allowed me to read this book for review.  It will be published June 5th.

The thatch burns down and takes him with it.  Everyone believes it was an accident except his previous superior and the neighbor renting to him.  Finally Inspector Mcdonald is called in.  He finds various odd facts but nothing that amounts to proof.  But he doesn't stop digging.  More hints show up with further fact finding. He finally finds himself confronted by a madman, who confirms his theories and plans to kill him...

It takes a lot of dogged police work and a very persistent detective to get to bottom of this murder.  There was even another murder done before it was over.  But it's finally over.
