Modern Cartooning by Christopher Hart

Does your child like to draw?  This book offers a good look at different techniques for drawing.  The subtitle is:  Essential Techniques for Drawing Today's Popular Cartoons.

Watson Guptill sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you).  It's available for sale now, so check with your local bookstore for a copy.  He's also done Young Artists Draw Manga and other art books, so you might want to pick up more than one.

One of the things Mr Hart does that I like a lot is give you step by step instructions.  He starts with a rough sketch and refines it, showing how the design choices you make influence the final character design.  He even demonstrates why one technique is better than another.  He makes it look very easy and that should encourage your child to keep drawing.

Art has never been my forte, but I envy those who do it with skill and make it look easy.  If you have an artist in your household, encourge them and help them develop their skills.  Cartoonists and illustrators are needed to make life better for everyone.

Happy reading.
