The Penderwicks at Point Mouette by Jeanne Birdsall

The Penderwicks are splitting up for vacations.  How will they handle these smaller groups and new responsibilities?

Alfred A Knopf sent me a copy of this book for review (thank you).  It has already been published and is the third book in the series.  I read the first two some time ago, and was pleased to get to visit with the children again.

The Penderwicks are just as endearing as they were in the first two books.  Everyone is growing up, but their challenges aren't over yet!  Their father has married again and he and his new wife and her small child go on their honeymoon.  Rosalind goes to stay with a friend at the beach and get some rest from supervising the younger ones.  That leaves Skye as OAP (oldest available Penderwick).  Skye is much better at math and science than babysitting...

Jeffrey comes along, too, at the last minute.  Skye's note on what she needs to do gets wet and can't be read.  Aunt Claire, who was to help with the care of the children, sprains her ankle.  And this all happens by the end of Day One!

This is a rollicking good story with typical kid's shenanigans and dog adventures and a real surprise for Jeffrey.  This book made me laugh and cry both.  Why not give it a try yourself?  And, if you haven't read the others, check them out.  You'll grow to love these characters.

Happy reading!
