What do you do when you are a child suddenly alone?  

This is an odd family to begin with and it gets even odder.  They live in their home, hoarding things away.  They hide.  They sneak around the neighbor's houses, try to get along, visit with dad when he's home but where is their life going?

At the end of the story, you'll still wonder...
